Hot stone massage rests on a simple idea: heat does what pressure alone cannot always do. Basalt, a volcanic rock that holds warmth for a long time, is heated in a water bath and then glided along the back, legs and arms, cradled in the therapist’s palm.
As the warmth sinks in, the muscles let go deep down without anyone needing to press hard. Some stones stay in place on precise points, along the spine, in the hands, under the neck, while the therapist works elsewhere with warm oil. The whole body is treated in 60 minutes, at Izzy Spa and at Izzy Studio, our two addresses in Verbier.
Who is it for?
This is the treatment we recommend when the Verbier cold has settled into your shoulders and neck: after a day of skiing at minus ten, a snowshoe hike or simply a long winter. It also suits guests who find deep tissue too intense yet want genuine muscle release, and anyone who sleeps badly in stressful periods. If you are after targeted work on knots, the bamboo & cupping massage at the Studio is a better match.
How the treatment goes
- Welcome and consultation We spend a few minutes on your current tension and check together that nothing stands in the way of heat. Meanwhile, the stones finish warming.
- Warming up Lying face down, you first feel a few stones placed along the spine through a towel. The back adjusts to the temperature and begins to relax already.
- Stone and oil massage The therapist then massages with stones in hand, in long strokes with warm oil: back, legs, arms, then the front of the body, alternating stones and hands depending on the area.
- Resting stones Smaller stones are placed in the palms, between the toes or under the neck. This is the point at which most of our guests fall asleep.
- Back to calm The stones are removed one by one, the therapist finishes with light strokes and lets you come round in your own time. Drink plenty of water over the following hours.

Good to know
Avoid a heavy meal just before the session and bring warm clothes for afterwards: the body stays warm for several hours. At the Spa, the treatment follows on beautifully from the sauna. Have a look at our après-ski offer too. Not recommended during pregnancy, with a fever, acute circulatory problems or damaged skin. Please tell us about any ongoing treatment or sensitivity to heat.
Frequently asked questions
They are heated in a temperature-controlled water bath to feel very warm yet comfortable on oiled skin. The therapist always tests each stone before placing it and adjusts the heat to how you feel.
Both. The heat relaxes the muscles deep down, which lets the therapist reach tension without strong pressure. The result feels like a firm massage, with the sensation of a very gentle one.
Yes, at the Spa. We suggest using the sauna or hammam before the massage rather than after: your body will already be warm and receptive, and you end the day on the massage rather than on another rise in temperature.
The durations shown are the actual treatment time. Allow about ten extra minutes for the welcome and for changing.
